Mollem Goa

Mollem is a small village located along the eastern border of Goa. The nearest town, Ponda, is situated about 29 kilometers away. Mollem is famous for the Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary, which was earlier known as the Mollem game sanctuary. This wildlife park has given this otherwise quaint and nondescript village the status of one of the major tourist destinations in Goa. The sanctuary is among the four biggest sanctuaries of the state.

Attractions :

Bhagwan Mahavir sanctuary : The chief attraction of Mollem in Goa, as said above, is its wildlife sanctuary. The Bhagwan Mahavir sanctuary is noted for its wide range of wildlife. Having started as a protected game park in 1969, the Mollem sanctuary was declared a National Park as well in 1978. Some 107 square kilometers were brought under the area of Mollem National Park.

The wildlife at Mollem includes many noted species that make up the wildlife of Goa. These include Gaur, deer, monkeys, elephants, leopard, sloth bear, flying squirrel, Malayan giant squirrel, civet, porcupine, Jungle fowl, and black panthers which are rarely spotted. The park is known for the king cobras found here. Besides the cobra, the park also has other snakes like Pythons, Viper and Krait.

The splendid variety of birds found in the forest is the major tourist attractions in Mollem. The birds spotted here include Indian woodpeckers, Paradise fly catcher, Drongo, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Barbets, Great Indian Horn Bill, Kingfishers, Emerald Dove, and Wagtails. Around 200 species have been identified.

Nature Interpretation centre : This center gives information about the forest and its components.

Dudhsagar falls : This beautiful waterfall has a height of about 200 meters, and is located inside the sanctuary.

The Devil Canyon (Devcharacho kond), Tambdi Shiva temple, sunset point and the Khandepar River are the other attractions in Mollem.

Access:

Air : the Dabolim airport is located about 80 kilometers away.

Railway : Colem, 5 kilometers away, is the nearest railhead. The area falls on the Mormugao - Londa railway route.

Road : you will get regular bus services of the Kadamba Transport Corporation from Panaji (60 kilometers).
