Fort- Fort Aguada

Aguada Fort was built in the year 1612 to put a stop on the ships entering river Mandovi and in turn protect old Goa from attacks by the enemy forces.

At Fort Aguada, is located the first light house built in Asia. The light house is a magnificent structure to look at.

Over the time, Fort Aguada has been the sight of some of the major historical battles between ruling dynasties. Many barracks and ammunition were fitted inside the fort as well and the magnificent structure acted as the first line of defense for Portuguese that ensured their control in the state.

At the current moment, the fort serves as the Central Jail of Goa. The tower bell is still erected and is fixed into the Church of Lady of Immaculate Conception. It is reminiscent of the glorious days the monument has witnessed.

Temple – Mahalaxmi Temple

Mahalaxmi Temple, which was built in the year 1413, is one of the major attractions in Goa. Tourists visit this glorious temple to worship Goddess Mahalaxmi, the Goddess of strength and power.

  • I’d definitely recommend Flea Market at Anjuna Beach. Its a fantastic place to shop for curious and garments. You have only mentioned one church but did you know that the Churches and Cathedrals of South Goa are inscribed as World Heritage Site by UNESCO?

    It’s worth a while to explore the crumbling structure of South Goa with its old world charm and its Portuguese connection. Once it was said that one need not visit Lisbon if he/she has traveled to Goa.
