Shimgo festival is one of the most celebrated festivals in Goa, which is planned in an absolutely grand manner. The duration of this festival is around a fortnight. This annual festival is known as Shigmotsav in Goa. This festival is similar to Holi, the festival of colors, celebrated with much joy and fervor in the northern part of India. On this day, people apply colored powder on the faces of their loved one and eat sweets.
Shigmo festival is generally celebrated in the month of March, every year. The dates vary as per the Hindu calendar, based on the lunar cycle. This year, it will be starting somewhere around 28th March and will be coming to an end on 10th April 2013. It generally starts with the appearance of moon on the ninth day, coming to an end on the full moon day. The annual festival is celebrated just before the Lent festival of the Catholics in which there is fasting and no feasting. Locals abstain themselves from drinking alcohol and similar sort of things. All this goes on for almost one month. Thus, the Shigmo festival is seen as the last time to indulge in any kind of fun and partying. It is mainly a spring festival.
The celebration of the Shigmo festival includes the organization of huge fairs and parades, all around the state. A number of groups and communities take part in the celebration. Various kinds of competitions, such as folk art, dance, music etc, are also organized, with cash prices as well. The whole state is painted with colors. The participators adorn beautiful clothes and dress- up like various characters. They become a part of the procession moving around the streets. A major part of the picture on the streets is filled with mythological and legendary characters. This is a great time to enjoy the real spirit of the state of Goa.
